I must admit, I got confused with all those free (or paid) cloud storage out there. DropBox, Google Drive, Cubby, Box, SkyDrive, BitCasa is to name a few popular ones. But they all range from 1-5GB, given, and you need to pay more for bigger space.
Hey I'm lucky I got my 50GB at DropBox when I got my Galaxy Note 2 & another 25GB when I got my HTC One. Limited for 2 years. But that's different, that shouldn't count. Besides, I've only used 1.3% of it. Below 1gb.
So what I do is I wanna set up my own NAS, Network Attached Storage, then to set it up as my own Cloud Storage. I gotta make it big. I wanna have a centralised music library that can be accessed from all of my devices connected to the network, even when I'm outside the house. I wanna start my own collection of 1080p movies. Some classics, some TV Series and the movies you can think of really.
What I need:
- an understanding of the battlefield, read: the house.
- an internet connection, a fast one! well, depends on what you wanna download & how patience you are & how many devices will be connected.
- a Router
- Extenders
- a NAS
- and maybe.. a TV / media server.
My house is a bit small, 145sqm, but its a 3 stories high, with so many walls. This could blocked the wifi signals and that is why I need an extender. I put my router on the 2nd floor, centre of the house, and extend the signal with Extenders.
I use Biznet's MyMax3 5Mbps connection including the HDtv. 500k/month. The service was not good at beginning when the decoder broke down a lot & the technicians couldn't figure out how to prevent it from keep happening. But in the end, I like MyMax3 because the user is not as plenty as FirstMedia, so I get to eat up all the bandwidth! *evil*
I have 2 laptops, about 5 other gadgets that will connect to the network. So, yeah..
Router: LinkSys AC 1200 (EA6300).
For the router, I want to have something that is first of all, reliable. I want that router also to be ready for streaming movies. It has to be ready with Apps as well, just to be cool and easy about it. I'm lazy, so there you go. My choice lies to LinkSys AC1200. It priced just over 1 million rupiah, about 1.2-1.3. ($129). This baby is not top of the line (AC1750, $199) but it does the job well.
Offering up to 867 Mbps on the 5GHz (like MacBooks, iPhone 5, iPads) and up to 300MBps on the 2.4Ghz (most devices). LinkSys AC1200 is the ideal fit for a small home, like mine, with 3 to 5 connected devices. (unlike mine, but its okay, I wanna push it)
It has its own apps that ables me, from distance, remotely, to do all sorts of things like giving parental control (to my unborn child), creating a guest access, controlling the connected devices, and also installing additional apps like "Block the Bad Stuff" | It blocks the bad stuff away from the internet, like porn. But, I got no kids yet, I wouldn't want that, would I?
All apps available on iOS & Android.
Extender: LinkSys RE1000 (about Rp. 700-800k)
I chose this because its too damn easy to connect it.
Plug it to a power point,
connect your gadget to the extender as a hotspot,
open your browser,
login as username admin, password admin,
go to "wireless", choose the hotspot you wanna connect to, put in password,
Voila!
NAS: could be anything, really
You could buy any storage devices connected via USB. Even USB 3.0, coz LinkSys EA6300 supports USB 3.0 or a NAS via an ethernet like I chose WD MyBook Live. One of the reason is because it sleeps by itself when I'm not using it and again, has its own apps. I bought 3TB, I'm gonna download like krayzi!
Oh yeah, you can really add something else. Which is either a jailbroken AppleTV or a WD TV Live. All below Rp. 2 Million.
I know, I can be over the top.. Poor wife has to put up with me.. *sigh*
