KakaoTalk, Speed Booster, to be a hell lot Fastah!

It must have been confusing on how many chat client available out there.

I still remember when ICQ was king and MiRC was the place to hang out. I was at #dancepool, #dejavu and #labschool, and met a girl thru MiRC. Dayumm.. those days were funneh.

Then the era evolves to the independent chat client like ICQ, but based on emails. Hence comes MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, AOL, Google Talk and Skype. There were also apps that combine those chat services. Apps like Mig, Trillian, and I forgot what else. Yeah, I'm that old.

And now? yeah, we are in the mobile era. every chat goes on via mobile. It was mobile first, computers second. This era,  I say, was started by BlackBerry with its BlackBerry Messenger. This chat client has been phenomenal in Indonesia. We might be the country with the most users of BBM. or, we were?

Now comes the chat client that does soooooooo many things. I have installed in my phone, BBM, WhatsApp, LINE, Skype, Telegram, & KakaoTalk. Now chat has so many gimmicks like games. Games are selling & making money a lot faster via chat client. Now who would of thought of it? LINE & KakaoTalk are leading the way in terms of gimmicks.

I was invited by KakaoTalk to chat around at their office. What this Korean chat app has done is, I have to admit, pretty darn well good. Some things that surprises me:

  1. The limit of the group chat is.. umm.. 10000. Thats 4 zeros! You can start your own cult & preach there.
  2. The office looks nice, the yellow feel is energizing, but not too much like that yellow politics.
  3. The ability to find friends, with or without phone numbers.
  4. The SuperPensi promo is a great idea. Brings crowd, effectively, I say.
  5. Last but not least, the speed! Kakao, proving me with videos, that they are faster compared to other chat client.
Lets talk about the last one a bit deeper. The way they do it is to split the files and send it thru several channels. Just like Download Managers, remember? This somehow makes it still possible to send file even in 2G network. As long as you have internet connection, no matter how slow, how unreliable, as long as there is, Kakao will send the message. And yes, the speed helps the sending of files (pics, sound, video) faster as well.

But still the question is, how do KakaoTalk move people from other chat clients?

What is the main reason you choose a particular chat client? its the amount of known contacts on that client. that's it! I still use BBM because I have too many clients, friends & family there. I use WhatsApp for the same reason. LINE and KakaoTalk ahead because the gimmicks, the games & stickers. Some don't like 'em, but most does.

Hey, if you ever wanna ask a question, or just chat up, KaTalk me at @sheggario.
